IRS to Offer Saturday Hours at Taxpayer Assistance Centers

IRS to Offer Saturday Hours at Taxpayer Assistance Centers

The IRS has announced that it will offer Saturday hours at many of its Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country, as part of its efforts to improve customer service during the tax season. The special Saturday hours will be available on March 11, April 8, and May 13, from 9am to 4pm

Walk-In Service Without Appointments

During these special Saturday hours, taxpayers will be able to receive face-to-face assistance from IRS employees without an appointment. Normally, these centers are open only during the week, and people need to schedule appointments to receive services. However, during the Saturday hours, walk-ins will be accepted for all services routinely offered at an office, except for cash payments. Tax return preparation is not a service provided at IRS TACs.

Types of Services Offered

The IRS TACs offer a variety of services, including assistance with tax bills, resolving tax problems, and audit assistance. IRS employees specializing in these services will be available to provide assistance to taxpayers. If these employees are not available, individuals will receive a referral for additional help on these services. The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service employees may also be available to help with some issues.

Interpreter Services

Professional foreign language interpretation will be available through an over-the-phone translation service in many languages. For deaf or hard of hearing individuals who need sign language interpreter services, IRS staff will schedule appointments for a later date. Alternatively, these individuals can call TTY/TDD 800-829-4059 to make an appointment.

Documents Needed

Individuals visiting a Taxpayer Assistance Center should bring the following documents with them:

  • Current government-issued photo identification.
  • Social Security cards or ITINs for themselves and all members of their household, including their spouse and dependents (if applicable).
  • Any IRS letters or notices received and related documents.
  • For identity verification services, two forms of identification and, if filed, a copy of the tax return for the year in question.

During the visit, IRS staff may also request the following information:

  • A current mailing address.
  • Proof of bank account information included on a tax return to receive payments or refunds by direct deposit.

Types of Help Available

The IRS advises individuals to visit IRS.gov for assistance 24/7 instead of traveling to an office, as it is the most efficient way to obtain help. There are a variety of self-service tools and resources available on the website to address common tax-related concerns such as IRS identity protection services, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) requests, refunds, transcripts, and payment options.

To access these resources, individuals can go to IRS.gov, where they can find features such as:

Other available resources include the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System for making all types of federal tax payments, the Online Payment Agreement for setting up installment payments, and the Interactive Tax Assistant and FAQs for getting answers to many tax law questions.

Additionally, all current tax forms, instructions, and publications can be found and downloaded from the website. Individuals without internet access can call 800-829-3676 to order tax forms by mail.
