I have been with Taxes for Expats since 2016

I have been with Taxes for Expats since 2016. At that time, I learned that as an American, I should have been filing tax returns for YEARS while living and working in Germany. They helped me catch up with the Streamlined program and I have filed every year since through them. The process has only gotten more refined over the years. I am a happy client.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need to file US taxes if I live in Germany?
Yes, all US citizens and green card holders must file US tax returns annually, regardless of where they live. You must report worldwide income to the IRS, even if you pay German taxes.
2. How can I avoid double taxation on my US taxes while living in Germany?
On your US tax return, you can use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) to exclude up to $130,000 in 2025, or claim the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) for German taxes paid. The FTC reduces your US tax liability dollar-for-dollar.
3. What are my US expat tax filing deadlines from Germany?
US expats receive an automatic extension to June 15 for IRS filing. You can request a further extension to October 15. Any US taxes owed must be paid by April 15 to avoid IRS interest charges.
4. Do I need to report my German bank accounts to the IRS?
Yes, if your foreign accounts exceed $10,000 at any time, you must file FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) with the IRS by April 15. You may also need FATCA Form 8938 on your US tax return.
5. How does the US-Germany tax treaty affect my US taxes?
The treaty prevents double US taxation on certain income and provides guidance on Foreign Tax Credits. It helps reduce your US tax liability by clarifying which German taxes qualify for FTC on your US return.
6. What if I haven't filed US taxes in years while living in Germany?
You may qualify for IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, allowing you to catch up on 3 years of US tax returns and 6 years of FBARs with reduced IRS penalties.
7. Do I report my German pension (Rentenversicherung) on my US tax return?
Yes, German pension contributions and benefits may require reporting on your US tax return. The IRS may treat certain pensions differently from how Germany does. Treaty provisions can help prevent double taxation.
8. Do I report German investment income to the IRS?
Yes, report all German dividends, interest, and capital gains on your US tax return (Schedules B and D). Claim Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) for German withholding tax (Kapitalertragsteuer) paid.
9. What if I work remotely for a US company from Germany?
You still report all income on your US tax return. You can claim FEIE or FTC depending on whether you pay German taxes on this income. Work visa requirements may affect your German tax status, but US tax filing remains mandatory.
10. How do German "mini-jobs" (450-Euro-Jobs) affect US taxes?
Even though mini-jobs are tax-free in Germany, you must report this income on your US tax return. You can use FEIE to potentially exclude it, or the low amount may be covered by your standard deduction.
11. When should I hire a US expat tax specialist for Germany?
Consider professional help if you have German bank accounts, earn over $100,000, are self-employed, have German pensions or investments, need Foreign Tax Credit optimization, or haven't filed US taxes in years.
