Complicated tax situation made easy

I have been out of the country for 3 yrs and working for my US employer while living abroad. I got my divorce and remarried while in Switzerland. I needed to have my taxes done properly. They took that burden off of me after many hours of research. I couldn't be happier.

I used a tax local firm for several years here in Switzerland

I used a tax local firm for several years here in Switzerland but was not completely happy with my experience there. I decided to make a change and I can say that my experience with Taxes for Expats has been very positive so far and I will be using their services again this year. I would recommend them to anyone. My tax preparer was very competent and helpful with any questions I had.

I've used Taxes for Expats for the past few years

I've used Taxes for Expats for the past few years (I'm an American living in Switzerland). The interface is pretty straightforward and each tax preparer I've had has been helpful and responsive. It's been a low-stress experience each time and I plan on continue using them.

They know what they're doing + awesome service

I was surprised in a very good way to see how pro and efficient they are. I live in Switzerland and for American expats it is not easy to try to find someone that can help us file US. Taxes for Expats managed to do it a record time. They just ask you to provide certain docs and they take care of the rest. I would highly recommend them :)

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need to file US taxes if I live in Switzerland?
Yes, all US citizens and green card holders must file US tax returns annually, regardless of where they live. You must report worldwide income to the IRS, even if you pay Swiss taxes.
2. How can I avoid double taxation on my US taxes while living in Switzerland?
On your US tax return, you can use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) to exclude up to $130,000 in 2025, or claim the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) for Swiss taxes paid. The FTC reduces your US tax liability dollar-for-dollar.
3. What are my US tax filing deadlines as an expat in Switzerland?
US expats receive an automatic extension to June 15 for IRS filing. You can request a further extension to October 15. Any US taxes owed must be paid by April 15 to avoid IRS interest charges.
4. Do I need to report my Swiss bank accounts (UBS, PostFinance, Credit Suisse) to the IRS?
Yes, if your foreign accounts exceed $10,000 at any time, you must file FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) with the IRS by April 15. You may also need FATCA Form 8938 on your US tax return.
5. What if I haven't filed US taxes in years while living in Switzerland?
You may qualify for IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, allowing you to catch up on 3 years of US tax returns and 6 years of FBARs with reduced IRS penalties, provided non-compliance was non-willful.
6. Do I report Swiss Pillar 2 and 3a pensions on my US tax return?
Yes, Swiss pension contributions and benefits require reporting on your US tax return. Pillar 2 employer contributions may be taxable for US purposes, even though they reduce your Swiss taxable income. Pillar 3a deductions don't reduce US taxable income.
7. Do I report Swiss investment income to the IRS?
Yes, report all Swiss dividends, interest, and capital gains on your US tax return (Schedules B and D). Claim Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) for Swiss withholding taxes (Verrechnungssteuer) paid. Swiss tax rates of 35% on dividends create significant FTC.
8. How do I report income from lump-sum taxation (Pauschalbesteuerung) on my US return?
Even if you qualify for Swiss lump-sum taxation (available in some cantons for non-working wealthy residents), you must still report all worldwide income on your US tax return. The IRS doesn't recognize lump-sum taxation arrangements.
9. How do I report Swiss real estate on my US tax return?
Report Swiss rental income on Schedule E of your US tax return. Capital gains from sale go on Schedule D. You can claim Foreign Tax Credits for Swiss property taxes and capital gains taxes paid on your US return.
10. When should I hire a US expat tax specialist for Switzerland?
Consider professional help if you have Swiss bank accounts, earn over $100,000, have Pillar 2/3a pensions, own Swiss property or investments, need Foreign Tax Credit optimization, or haven't filed US taxes in years.
