TFX are legends

My wife is a US/Australian dual citizen, that runs her own business. I've used TFX since 2018 to manage her complicated tax obligations and they've been truly awesome. They're super-systemized and very efficient with their work. This is what tax accounting should be like. I couldn't recommend them more for US citizens working abroad. Legends.

A simple solution to complex taxes

I had complex taxes in the US. I own a house, I have stock, I make charitable donations. And this makes things a little tricky. And now I live in Australia, and pay AUS taxes. Which makes things REALLY tricky. I found Taxes for Expats, which was able to deal with it quickly and accurately.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need to file US taxes if I live in Australia?
Yes, all US citizens and green card holders must file US tax returns annually, regardless of where they live. The US taxes based on citizenship, not residence. You must report worldwide income to the IRS.
2. How can I avoid double taxation on my US taxes while living in Australia?
On your US tax return, you can use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) to exclude up to $130,000 in 2025, or claim the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) for Australian taxes you paid. The FTC reduces your US tax liability dollar-for-dollar.
3. What are my US tax filing deadlines as an expat in Australia?
US expats receive an automatic extension to June 15 for IRS filing. You can request a further extension to October 15. Any US taxes owed must be paid by April 15 to avoid IRS interest charges.
4. Do I need to report my Australian bank accounts to the IRS?
Yes, if your foreign accounts exceed $10,000 at any time, you must file FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) with the IRS by April 15. You may also need FATCA Form 8938 on your US tax return.
5. What happens if I haven't filed US taxes in years while living in Australia?
You may qualify for IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, allowing you to catch up on 3 years of US tax returns and 6 years of FBARs with reduced IRS penalties.
6. Do I need to report my Australian superannuation on my US tax return?
Yes, Australian super may require Form 3520/3520-A on your US tax return. The IRS treats some super funds as foreign trusts. This is complex US tax reporting - professional guidance recommended.
7. How do I report Australian investment income to the IRS?
Report all dividends, interest, and capital gains on your US tax return (Schedules B and D). Claim Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) for Australian taxes withheld. Franking credits may increase your FTC.
8. What if I own Australian property - do I report it to the IRS?
Yes, rental income goes on Schedule E of your US tax return. Capital gains from sale are reported on Schedule D. You can claim Foreign Tax Credits for Australian CGT paid on your US return.
9. When should I hire a US expat tax specialist for my IRS filing?
Consider professional help if you have Australian accounts, earn over $100,000, have superannuation, own Australian property, need Foreign Tax Credit optimization, or haven't filed US taxes in years.
