Years of experience with Taxes for Expats

As an expat in France, and now retired in Spain, I have been working with Taxes for Expats for several years. Taxes in the US have always been complicated, and they make the whole procedure easy and painless.

I'm really glad that I found them

I have earned income in France, pension income in France, a pension from U.S. Social Security, earned income in the U.S. and dividends and capital gains in the U.S. I have lost track of the number of different forms that I am supposed to file. The Taxes for Expats site is well done, and allows me to enter all the information conveniently. In case of problems or questions, the person who follows my case is available to help. I'm really glad that I found them.

Friendly secure reliable and quick service

I have been living in France for a long time now but my tax return got complicated recently and a good friend recommended TFX for their professional advice, having taxes completed and for peace of mind! They were very reactive and we spoke by phone before I signed up and during the process I also needed to ask some questions. All went very well and the website is so user friendly I really liked that also. I highly recommend this website they are a great service.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need to file US taxes if I live in France?
Yes, all US citizens and green card holders must file US tax returns annually, regardless of where they live. Filing taxes for US expats in France is mandatory, even if you pay high French taxes. The US taxes based on citizenship, not residence, so your French income must be reported to the IRS.
2. Can I use the Foreign Tax Credit for my French taxes?
Yes, and this is essential for Americans in France. With French income tax rates up to 45%, plus social charges (CSG/CRDS) of 9.7-17.2%, the total tax burden can reach 55-62%. You can claim Foreign Tax Credits (Form 1116) for French taxes paid, which typically eliminates or significantly reduces your US tax liability. France's extremely high taxes make FTC invaluable.
3. Do I need to report my French bank accounts to the IRS?
Yes, if your French bank accounts (BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, LCL, etc.) exceed $10,000 USD at any time during the year, you must file FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) by April 15. You may also need FATCA Form 8938 if accounts exceed $200,000 for single filers.
4. What are my US tax filing deadlines from France?
US expats in France receive an automatic extension to June 15 for IRS filing. You can request a further extension to October 15. Any US taxes owed must be paid by April 15 to avoid IRS interest charges. Since France uses the calendar year like the US, income allocation is straightforward.
5. How do I report French social charges on my US tax return?
French social charges (CSG - Contribution Sociale Généralisée and CRDS - Contribution au Remboursement de la Dette Sociale) are generally creditable as foreign taxes on Form 1116. These charges of 9.7-17.2% significantly increase your total Foreign Tax Credit, often resulting in zero US tax liability given France's already high income tax rates.
6. How do I report my French pension on my US tax return?
French pension contributions (régime de base, régime complémentaire) generally require reporting on your US tax return. Contributions may or may not be deductible for US purposes depending on the pension type. The US-France tax treaty provides some relief for pension distributions. Professional guidance is essential as French pension reporting is complex.
7. Should I use FEIE or Foreign Tax Credit in France?
For most Americans in France, the Foreign Tax Credit is far better than FEIE. With French tax rates of 45% plus social charges reaching a total of 55-62%, you'll have more than enough foreign tax credits to offset your US tax liability completely. FTC also preserves IRA contribution eligibility. FEIE is rarely optimal in high-tax France.
8. What if I haven't filed US taxes in years while living in France?
You may qualify for IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, allowing you to catch up on 3 years of US tax returns and 6 years of FBARs with reduced penalties, provided non-compliance was non-willful. Many France expats didn't realize that US filing was required despite paying extremely high French taxes.
9. How does micro-entrepreneur status affect my US taxes?
If you're a micro-entrepreneur (auto-entrepreneur) in France, you must report this income on Schedule C of your US tax return and typically pay US self-employment tax (15.3%), even while paying French social charges. Foreign Tax Credits can offset some US liability. The simplified French regime doesn't simplify US reporting.
10. Can I contribute to a US IRA while living in France?
Yes, if you have qualifying earned income and use the Foreign Tax Credit strategy (not FEIE). Since the FTC is optimal for France's high-tax environment, most expats can maintain IRA eligibility. You can contribute up to $7,000 ($8,000 if 50+) for 2025, assuming sufficient earned income.
11. How does the US-France tax treaty affect my taxes?
The US-France tax treaty prevents double taxation and provides guidance on which country has primary taxing rights for different income types. It's particularly important for pensions, dividends, and social security, and includes provisions for the French wealth tax. The treaty has saving clause provisions, meaning the US still taxes its citizens on worldwide income but allows Foreign Tax Credits.
12. When should I hire a US tax accountant for France?
Consider hiring an expatriate tax service in France if you have French bank accounts over $10,000, pay French social charges, earn over $100,000, are a micro-entrepreneur, have French pensions, need Foreign Tax Credit optimization (critical in high-tax France), or haven't filed US taxes in years. France's extremely high tax burden requires specialized US expat tax expertise.
