I have used TFX for years now. Their online system is clear and user-friendly, and they answer queries promptly (barring US/UK time differences!). The US tax forms are ridiculously over-complex so TFX have been a huge help.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need to file US taxes if I live in the UK?
Yes, US citizens and green card holders must file US tax returns regardless of where they live. This is because the US taxes based on citizenship, not residence. Even if you pay UK taxes, you're still required to report your worldwide income to the IRS annually.
2. How can I avoid double taxation as a US expat in the UK?
You can avoid double taxation through the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE), which excludes up to $130,000 in 2025, or the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC), which gives you a dollar-for-dollar credit for UK taxes paid. The US-UK tax treaty also provides relief for certain types of income.
3. What are the US tax filing deadlines for expats in the UK?
US expats receive an automatic extension to June 15, but can request a further extension to October 15. However, any taxes owed are still due by April 15, so it's important to make estimated payments to avoid interest and penalties.
4. What is the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE)?
The FEIE allows eligible US expats to exclude up to $130,000 (2025 amount) of foreign earned income from US taxation. To qualify, you must pass either the Physical Presence Test (330 days abroad in 12 months) or the Bona Fide Residence Test (full calendar year of UK residence).
5. How does the end of the remittance basis affect US expats?
Starting April 2025, the UK eliminated the remittance basis taxation. Now, UK residents are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where it arises. This change may increase your UK tax liability, but it can also increase your Foreign Tax Credits available to offset US taxes.
6. What happens if I haven't filed US taxes in years?
You may qualify for the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures (SFCP), which allows you to catch up on the last 3 years of tax returns and 6 years of FBARs with reduced penalties, provided your non-compliance was non-willful.
7. When should I hire a US expat tax specialist?
Consider hiring a specialist if you have foreign accounts over $10,000, own foreign property, have self-employment income, receive a pension, own part of a foreign business, or haven't filed US taxes in several years. The complexity of dual tax systems makes professional help invaluable.
